Nokia sells its HQ in Finland, to stay there on a lease

Nokia's financials aren't what you'd call great lately, and as a result the company is selling its headquarters building in Espoo, Finland for €170 million.
The deal is expected to be finalized by the end of the year, but the company has no plans to move out afterwards. Instead it will lease it back and continue its operations there. The building offers 48,000 square meters of office real estate and has been housing Nokia's HQ since 1997.
Here's what the chief financial officer of Nokia, Timo Ihamuotia had to say.
We had a comprehensive sales process with both Finnish and foreign investors and we are very pleased with this outcome. As we have said before, owning real estate is not part of Nokia's core business and when good opportunities arise we are willing to exit these types of non-core assets. We are naturally continuing to operate in our head office building on a long-term basis.
Nokia is obviously in dire need of money and is trying to cash in on just about everything valuable it holds. In June the company sold its Vertu subsidiary and now its the HQ turn to go. Hopefully, the cash will help the company continue normal operating until the WP investment pays off. That Q4 report will make for a pretty interesting read.

Kidnappers Have Released Nollywood Actress Nkiru Sylvanus & Former Mr Nigeria, Kenneth Okolie

Good news reaching us is that Nollywood actress, Nkiru Sylvanus and former Mr Nigeria, Kenneth Okolie who were kidnapped on Saturday in Owerri have been released by their captors. Nkiru, who is also a special assistant on public relations to the Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha and Kenneth were kidnapped at a place where they were taping an episode of a public relation’s show, “Inside Imo” somewhere close to the famous Concord Hotel, Owerri. Vanguard reports that they were released on Thursday night.

After their kidnap, there were reports that the kidnappers demanded N100 million ransom for Nkiru’s release. But barely hours after an open letter was written to the IG of Police on the matter by concerned friends of the kidnap victims, they were released.

It was reported that the kidnappers blindfolded them and dropped them off at an unknown location where they were able to call friends to come pick them up. It is however uncertain if any ransom was paid.

We are glad they are out of their kidnappers custody and now reunited with family and friends.

Lagos International Airport on Fire

Picture of the inferno
An electrical fire was on Thursday morning reported at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.
An eyewitness said the fire emanated from some cables, which apparently melted under heat, as some welders were working at the extension of ‘D’ Wing of the international airport.
Airport officials swiftly cut off power supply to the arrival and departure halls, in order to forestall any untoward development and isolated the scene of the spark.
Billows of smoke were observed rising to the sky from behind the arrival hall.
Fire fighters were also deployed in the affected area and were able to put the situation under control.
Securitymen also erected a metal barricade around the site.
Power supply was restored to the airport terminal within a few minutes.
Flight operations were, however, not affected while the incident lasted.
In a separate incident, a cargo plane blew off the roof of a parking lot at the airport on Wednesday night, causing damage to some cars.
The extent of damage has yet to be ascertained.
More details later.

W.Va. gas line explodes, burns homes and roads

SISSONVILLE, W.Va. (AP) — At least five homes went up in flames Tuesday afternoon and a badly burned section of Interstate 77 in West Virginia was closed after a natural gas line exploded in an hour-long inferno.
No injuries were immediately reported, but firefighters had just begun to reach damaged structures late in the afternoon after the intense flames kept them at bay for several hours.
Several people were treated for smoke inhalation, and a shelter was set up at Sissonville High School, where Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin planned a late-afternoon press conference
State Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Baylous said a slight risk of a secondary explosion remained, but people were told to stay inside their homes rather than evacuate. The explosion occurred near Sissonville just before 1 p.m. in a 20-inch transmission line owned by NiSource Inc., parent of Columbia Gas.
The gas flow was shut off, but 1st Sgt. James Lee said there was still pressure on the transmission line.
"The gas company is doing a check on it now," he said.
Kent Carper, president of the Kanawha County Commission, said flames had been shooting 50 to 75 feet into the air before the fire was extinguished.
"It sounded like a Boeing 757. Just a roar," he said. "It was huge. You just couldn't hear anything. It was like a space flight."
Trevor Goins lives about a half-mile from the explosion and was watching television in his apartment when he saw a ripple in his coffee cup and the floor shook.
"I thought possibly (it was) a plane crash," said Goins, who immediately went outside with several neighbors. "It was so loud it sounded like a turbine engine. You almost had to put your hands over your ears."
He got in his car and drove closer, seeing fire that stretched as high as the hilltops.
"The flames were so high, they were so massive," he said. "I could only imagine what had happened"
Carper said the flames spanned about a quarter of a mile and ran through a culvert under the interstate.
"It actually cooked the interstate," he said. "It looks like a tar pit."
The interstate will be shut down for two days while engineers and inspectors repair the damage and assess whether a bridge was compromised, said State Police Sgt. Chris Zerkle. Route 21 will also be closed until further notice, he said.
Zerkle said a State Police helicopter team was going up to ascertain the extent of the damage while a command center was being set up nearby.
Mike Banas, communications manager for NiSource, said the company was still gathering facts.
"Our first priority is the safety of our employees and the community," he said, adding that no impacts on customers are anticipated.
Sissonville Fire Chief Tim Gooch said a nursing home is less than a mile from the site of the blast, but the patients are safe. Paramedics were sent to check on them as a precaution.

Samsung Galaxy S IV to come in April with unbreakable screen?

Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S IV is making the headlines again with new rumors hinting at a possible April 2013 announcement date.
In addition, Reuters is reporting some gossip about an unbreakable display that the flagship will be featuring. Samsung is said to ditch the usual glass cover for its displays in favor of a plastic one, which is said to be virtually impossible to break.
If indeed that's the case, Samsung might be making a case for a huge selling point with a display that doesn't shatter when dropped or hit with heavy object.
Add this to the previous rumors of the device packing a 4.99" 1080p full HD display with a pixel density of 441ppi, and the Galaxy S IV is shaping up to be one extraordinary device indeed. As expected, Samsung has refused to comment on any of the rumors for now.
