A 27-year-old lady was murdered and her body dumped at Karuma Falls, Kiryandongo, Uganda.
Martha Acio, according to a staff identity card found on her body by police, indicates that she was working as a cashier at the power utility company.
The body was recovered by fishermen.
The officer-in-charge of Karuma Police Post, Mr Johnson Onapa, said the body was seen floating on the river banks by Mr Willy Oryem, one of the fishermen, last Friday morning.
“He alerted us and when we went to the scene, we found her national Identity Card bearing the names of Martha Acio, 27 years, who registered as a resident of Juba Road in Ojwina Division, Lira Municipality. She also had a staff identity card of Umeme indicating she is a cashier,” Mr Onapa said.
He added that the deceased’s body was already decomposing and physical examination revealed that she was killed from another place two days earlier.
The Kiryandongo Resident District Commissioner, Mr Linos Ngompek, said the deceased is suspected to have been killed by her boyfriend who is working with a Chinese company which is constructing Karuma Dam.
He said preliminary investigations by police and other security agencies revealed that Acio left Kampala a week ago to pick her seven-year-old daughter in Lira, and when she was going back to Kampala, she branched to see her boyfriend who is working at the construction site in Karuma where she spent a night together with her child.
Police said there were no arrests made yet.
“Relatives and police have since placed announcements on local radio stations in Kiryandongo, Lira and Apac districts to search for the missing girl, ” Mr Ngompek said.
Mr David Mugabe Alele, who is a relative of the deceased, said Acio went missing on Tuesday.
He said the deceased together with her daughter reportedly left Aduku on January 21, enroute to Kampala via Lira town, but they are not sure which vehicle they boarded and what happened afterwards.
“Martha Acio’s phone went off on Tuesday and we started looking for her not until on Friday morning when we got a call from Police in Karuma informing us that the body of a certain lady had been found offshores and a national identity card bearing the names of Martha Acio was found on her,” Mr Mugabe said.
He said when they saw the body, they found that it was of their relative who was missing. The body was taken to Kiryandongo Hospital where an autopsy was done on Saturday.
It was discovered that her neck was broken.
